A union leader representing personal support workers in the region is calling yesterday one of his best days on the job.

The province announced plans Tuesday to increase the wage for personal support workers by $4 an hour over the next three year.

While the news comes with celebration, some skepticism still remains. Part of the pay bump appears set in stone, but some is tied to the passing of the Liberal budget.

The province says it will increase the hourly wage of PSWs who work in home and community care settings to $16.50 an hour by April, 2016.

Bill Joblin, a Union representative for SEIU Healthcare said it was spectacular news. The Union went on a three-week strike in December asking for what it called a living wage.

Joblin believes the work action drew the attention of the public and the government to the pay they were receiving.

PSWs will see an immediate increase of $1.50.

Joblin says the union's ultimate goal is to see parity in pay between PSWs in nursing homes and hospitals.
