FORT FRANCES - The province has opened a new Ontario Provincial Police detachment in Fort Frances, according to a news release.

The new Rainy River District OPP detachment will provide 19,100 square feet of space including a secure multi-storage evidence vault, seven holding cells, closed-circuit television cameras and other advanced security features, according to a media release issued by the province on Tuesday, Oct. 27.

"Our government is committed to providing our police with the tools, resources and supports they need to do their jobs effectively," Solicitor General Sylvia Jones said in the release. "This new detachment in Fort Frances will meet the demands of police operations now and in the future and ensure the security of Ontarians and their families."

The new detachment is part of the OPP Modernization Phase 2 project. The initiative was originally announced in 2018 to replace nine aging OPP facilities across the province that no longer meet the requirements of today’s police operations, according to the news release.

The new detachment is located at 901 Colonization Road West in Fort Frances.  According to the release, construction for this detachment began last spring and was completed on time and on budget.

"This carefully designed detachment provides our officers and civilian members with everything they need to maintain our shared commitment with government to keep communities safe through modern, evolving policing services," OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique said in a statement.
