Ontario is spending $4 million to convert a pair of shuttered Northern Ontario wood-product mills into pellet-making facilities.

According to a release issued on Friday through Minister of Natural Resources Bill Mauro’s office, the mills, located in Wawa and Atikokan, the pellets will be used to power electrical generation plants both locally and internationally.

The money is being invested in Rentech Inc. through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation.

“The conversion of the two coal plants in Thunder Bay-Atikokan has led directly to the creation of the need for biomass pellets,” Mauro said in the release.
