DORION -The Ontario government on Monday confirmed it has set aside up to $1.3 million to replace a bridge on the road leading to Ouimet Canyon.

It's giving the Township of Dorion the money to upgrade the existing load-restricted bridge over Coldwater Creek.

Thunder Bay-Superior North MPP Michael Gravelle made the announcement in Dorion.

Gravelle said the bridge will be replaced by a modern structure "which will enable access to the area's natural attractions for heavy emergency response vehicles, maintenance vehicles, school buses and visitors."

After an engineering study showed that some pilings under the bridge had rotated, a weight limit of five tonnes was imposed, preventing vehicles such as a township snowplow and fire truck from using it.

The route also provides the most direct access to the Greenwich Lake wind farm, which requires large trucks to deliver equipment for maintenance.

The grant comes from the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund, which supports projects in municipalities with less than 100,000 people, as well as communities in northern and rural Ontario.
