The provincial government is helping Atikokan upgrade its sewage pumping stations and wastewater treatment plant.
MPP Bill Mauro (Lib. Thunder Bay – Atikokan) says the investment will help ensure that the community has safe and clean water supplies.
“It is a slightly more than $ 1million capital project, the province is contributing about $700,000 toward that,” Mauro said. “Atikokan will fund the balance. It’s a capital program to help both their water and waste water treatment systems.”
He added that in addition to preserving Atikokan's safe and clean water supply, the investment will also see the creation of jobs and further local economic development.
The program that led to this funding intends to help communities upgrade their water treatment facilities to avoid a recurrence of the tainted-water tragedy in Walkerton.
