THUNDER BAY -- The annual Great Pumpkin Compost Collection is being called another big success, according to EcoSuperior.
The pumpkin recycling program featured large bins set up at three locations around the city from Nov. 1 until the 12. EcoSuperior spokeswoman Jessica Backen says the bins were emptied for the final time Tuesday, and the total weight of all the pumpkins dropped off was just more than 23 tonnes.
That's less than the 25 tonnes collected last year, but it's on average with previous years.
Twenty tonnes is the equivalent of about 4,000 pumpkins.
The old Jack-o'-lanterns are now decomposing at the city landfill.
The material will become rich compost for local gardeners in the springtime, and will be made available to the public free of charge.
