SHUNIAH -- A plume of thick, black smoke could be seen around Shuniah during the lunch-hour after a fire broke out at the Ministry of Transportation yard on Highway 527.
A dump truck owned by Carillion Contracting caught fire due to a mechanical failure and became fully engulfed in flames. Several fire crews responded to the call and were able to safely extinguish the blaze with no injuries.
Propane tanks located close to the truck posed extra danger to the firefighters, but crews were able to reach the flames before they spread.
Shuniah Fire Chief Blair Arthur said crews were quick to respond to ensure the fire did not reach the MTO maintenance building.
