Area MP and NDP member John Rafferty stood up in the House of Commons to speak about the number of suicides that have been reported in the Pikangikum First Nation, and the unexplained deaths of seven First Nation students in Thunder Bay throughout the past decade.

Rafferty said he wants to know what the Minister of Aboriginal Affairs plans to do about the growing problem.

The seven students from Dennis Franklin Cromarty high school include 15-year-old Reggie Bushie, who died in 2007, and 15-year-old Jordan Wabasse, whose body was discovered earlier this year in the Kaministiqua River.

Rafferty also pointed to the report by the Chief Coroner on the epidemic of suicides in Pikangikum.

Rafferty added that he will continue to press the government to investigate the seven unexplained deaths in Thunder Bay.
