A vehicle collision on Monday resulted in a broken railway crossing arm.

A female driver ignored the flashing red lights and clanging bells and received a wake-up slap when the crossing arm descended and hit the windshield.

"Everyone got lucky," said Thunder Bay Police traffic Sgt. Glenn Porter in a release. "She was very fortunate that a more serious injury didn't result from the impact of a very heavy control arm or passing train. Traffic was backed up on both Memorial Avenue (at Dunlop) and the railroad for about a half hour."

The driver, not named by police, was charged with disobey rail crossing control and will face a $110 fine if convicted.

This story has been corrected from the original version to clarify the damage done.
