THUNDER BAY – A special weather statement issued on Saturday has been upgraded to a rainfall warning by Environment Canada.

A low-pressure system moving into the area is expected to bring heavy rain on Sunday and rainfall amounts could be between 25 and 35 millimeters.

The rain will develop Sunday morning and persist throughout the day. Rainfall is expected to be heaviest late Sunday morning and early afternoon and will end later this evening.

Locally higher amounts of rain could be possible in thunderstorms.

With the ground still partially frozen, water will not be absorbed as quickly and localized flooding is possible in low-lying areas.

People are advised to avoid creeks and riverbanks.
