Despite continuous air attacks all day Saturday, Ministry of Natural Resources crews are finding it difficult to contain Red Lake Fire Number 50 in the Sydney Lake area. 

In its Sunday report, the MNR reported the 120-hectare fire is still not under control.

There were five new fires confirmed by the evening of July 11 in the districts of Fort Frances, Nipigon and Red Lake.  

There were also four new fires by day’s end on July 10 including two in the Kenora District and two in the Red Lake District. One of the Kenora District fires is now out.

Thunder Bay Fire 30, located about 35 kilometers northwest of Armstrong has been declared out. This 0.5 hectare lightning-caused fire started on June 27 within Wabakimi Provincial Park and was monitored while it renewed the forest ecosystem.

The forest fire hazard forecast for July 12 is moderate to high across the entire Northwest Region and although rain is in the forecast is it not expected to bring any relief until the beginning of the week.

High humidity, high temperatures and lightning-strikes and human-caused fires are keeping firefighters and air attack busy.

Smoke drift from large fires in western Canada is forecast to continue bringing hazy conditions into the region.
