If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
That’s the message from the Thunder Bay detachment of the RCMP, which is now cautioning consumers to be wary of counterfeit goods.
RCMP Staff Sgt. Normand Roy said the force has recently seized counterfeit professional sports jerseys and cell phone cases.
“If you buy a normal jersey that’s worth about $120 for $20, you know there’s a possibility there’s something wrong here,” Roy said. “Some of the quality you’ll find is not satisfactory.”
He also advised consumers to examine the packaging for spelling errors or a strange appearance.
It is illegal under the Criminal Code to sell or distribute unlicensed or unregistered trademarks without permission, whether the product was produced in Canada or smuggled into the country.
He said the seizures have been a result of individuals purchasing items for family and friends and not in a local commercial setting.
“It’s not a major problem but we see little pockets here and there,” Roy said. “We want to warn members of the public about counterfeit goods.”
