THUNDER BAY -- Despite a flood in Lakehead University's Hangar over the weekend, the Thunderwolves Indoor Marathon held their biggest event ever.

Organizers placed fans around the track through Friday and Saturday so by race time on Sunday morning, the flood had no impact on the record 167 runners who attended.

Children Centre Foundation Thunder Bay coordinator Alana Bencharski made an extra effort in the event's seventh year to attract youth. There was even a separate 400-metre children's fun run amid the marathon, half-marathon, relay and 10-kilometre races.

"We've built up a lot of hype and we've tried to promote it to students," Bencharski said, pointing out the St. Martin School Mustangs running team, whose members circled the track 211 times in their 41-kilometre jog.

"We have 14 students running the full marathon. They are out there cheering and keeping everyone hyped up."

All proceeds will go to the Children's Centre's mental health education programs.
