THUNDER BAY — As of May 1, Thunder Bay residents can start recycling a much broader range of plastic containers.

The city's recycling program is being expanded to accept all # 1 through # 7 coded containers.

These include items such as yogurt, margarine and sour cream tubs.

Up to now, residents have only been allowed to recycle # 1 and # 2 coded plastic containers.

Expanding the list of recyclables is "something the community has been asking for, for a very long time," says Jason Sherband, manager of solid waste and recycling services for the city.

"To finally get to the point where we can offer this service is really exciting. We now have a program of acceptable material that is comparable or better than any other recycling program in the province," he added.

City council approved the expansion last October.

Residents are reminded to check the label on containers to ensure they are recyclable, and to clean them prior to leaving them at curbside or taking them to a recycling depot.
