RED LAKE, Ont. —  Red Lake is getting help from the provincial government to cover its costs related to a big forest fire that threatened to engulf the community last summer.

Red Lake 49 forced the evacuation of most of the sprawling municipality of 4,100 in August.

Residents were hosted in regional communities including Thunder Bay.

The province has announced it will provide up to $578,000 through the Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance program toward the costs of air and land evacuation as well as emergency services.

Eligible expenses may include operating and capital costs that are over and above regular municipal budgets, and are directly related to the disaster.

Municipalities become eligible for relief if their disaster-related costs reach a threshold of three per cent of their own-purpose taxation levy.
