Red Lake man charged after copper theft

RED LAKE, Ont. -- OPP officers are investigating the theft of copper from a business.

Police with the Red Lake detachment of the OPP say on Nov. 4 an area business owner reported that a man had entered the business property and was spotted removing material containing copper.

A suspect was identified and a search warrant was executed at the suspect's home.

Police say they found 860 pounds of copper wiring as well as an insecure firearm during that search.

Gerard Desmarais, 79, of Red Lake, was charged with possession of property obtained by crime, theft under $5,000, unsafe storage of a firearm and unauthorized possession of a firearm.
