Red Lake OPP and Ministry of Natural Resources officials say they had no choice but to put down a nuisance bear that was charging at children in the Northern Ontario community.

In a release issued on Thursday, OPP say police located the bear in question near the intersection of Howey and Crosscut streets, but were unable to frighten it away and it actually charged officers at the scene.

“Police dispatched the bear for the safety of the residents in that area,” the release says. “The OPP and the Ministry of Natural Resources would like to reassure the public that our combined efforts are altruistic and humane. Dispatching a bear is considered a last resort, but becomes necessary when aggressive behvaiour threatens human safety.”
