A Rocky Point Road residence was reduced to rubble Tuesday morning after a fire tore through the home.
Shunia Fire Department Chief Blair Arthur said no one was hurt in the blaze, which began around 6 a.m.
“The two residents who were at home were already up prior to the fire. They were up by about 10 minutes when they started to smell smoke in the house,” Arthur said in an interview with CKPR radio.
“They were both alarmed. The smoke alarms did activate and they were able to get out of the house.”
Arthur speculated the phone lines must have been damaged by the flames. The residents attempted to call 911, but were thwarted in their efforts.
“One of the residents went to a neighbour’s to call 911, while the other resident was able to get out,” Arthur said.
“We continue to put the fire out, but mainly covered the exposures from the closest buildings as the fire was already too far to stop.”
Sixteen firefighters responded to the call and the incident was under control within three hours.
The house is a total loss, Arthur said.
“The fire certainly started somewhere on the main floor. We don’t know what caused the fire at this time, but we do know where it started,” Arthur said, adding the homeowners were fully insured.
The investigation continues.
