THUNDER BAY -- Despite many area rivers appearing frozen the chairman of the Lakehead Regional Conservation Authority is cautioning people to stay off the ice.

“Stay off the ice because there could be localized thinning of the ice or things like that,” Bill Bartley said on Tuesday.

“You never know. There might be some areas where the water is flowing under the ice and there’s snow on top.”

The unseasonably warm start to December, which Bartley acknowledged has been “unbelievable,” appears to be sticking around for the foreseeable future.

Daily temperatures are expected to be at least 0C through the rest of the week into next Monday, which will likely result in some melting.

However, he doesn’t expect residents will have to worry about flooding considering the area has seen below average amounts of precipitation since August.

“We’re not anticipating any problems but we’re certainly keeping a close eye on and monitoring them,” Bartley said.

“If you’re going to have a melt this is a perfect melt because it’s not going to cause any problems that we expect.”
