A frequent winter visitor to the city’s harbour is getting a $3.6 million facelift.
The federal government on Friday announced a refit and maintenance contract for the CCSG Samuel Risley has been awarded to a Newfoundland shipyard.
The Risley, based in Parry Sound, Ont., is one of the Canadian Coast Guard’s icebreakers stationed on the Great Lakes and makes regular icebreaking trips to Thunder Bay. The ship is capable of breaking ice up to two feet thick.
The work, which is expected to be completed by September, includes replacement of the bow thruster, a crane overhaul and a recoating of the hull.
