Replacing city force with OPP not being considered: Virdiramo

It doesn't look as though the OPP will be taking over for the city’s police services, at least not anytime soon.

It doesn't look as though the OPP will be taking over for the city’s police services,  at least not anytime soon.

Last week Mayor Keith Hobbs, during budget discussions, suggested getting an estimate from the OPP about how much it would cost to have them police the city.

Hobbs said he's heard the OPP might cost as much as $5 million less.

The Chair of the Police Services Board, Joe Virdiramo, says the mayor brought up the costing as a possible way to save money for policing services. But Virdiramo says it was just a suggestion, and he insists that city police are here to stay.

Virdiramo says that if this were to happen in the future, city council would have to initiate a costing from the OPP before the Thunder Bay Police Board would take any action.
