Report coming to council on how to best deal with vacancies

THUNDER BAY -- Council will have options when a report comes back on how it should deal with vacancies.

Coun. Iain Angus said the city needs to have a policy in place should a councillor have to vacate his or her place. In the past council decided to appoint the runner-up but sometimes that process can become more about personalities and politics. He wants to see a by-election.

"Democracy should be the ultimate decider who sits at this table," he said.

“It will be a true and honest competition without the influence of the council of the day.”

Council can't always assume that the runner-up would be the electorate's choice should they have the chance to vote again.

Angus said that was his preference but city clerk John Hannam would come back to council with options. Council voted in favour of getting the report.
