THUNDER BAY — Senator Murray Sinclair has received another extension of the deadline to complete his investigation into the Thunder Bay Police Services Board.
The former head of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was originally scheduled to deliver his report by March 31, 2018.
The Ontario Civilian Police Commission then granted an extension to Aug. 31, saying this would allow Sinclair to consider the findings of a separate investigation into the Thunder Bay Police Service, and take into account new provincial regulations governing police oversight.
On Tuesday, the OCPC announced that the senator's report is now expected this fall with an anticipated public release "by the end of the year."
Just last week, an OCPC spokesperson had indicated it was still expecting to receive Sinclair's findings by Aug. 31.
After the report is delivered, the OCPC has said, it will "consider its findings and determine next steps."
The OCPC launched an investigation into the TB Police Services Board in July 2017 after Indigenous leaders questioned the board's oversight of the police service.
The police service itself has been under investigation by the Office of the Independent Police Review Director since November 2016. Director Gerry McNeilly is conducting a systemic review of its practices for policing Indigenous people.
There have been several revisions in the projected date for completion of his report as well. It is now expected to be made public at a news conference sometime this fall.
