SHUNIAH, Ont. — A 17-year-old girl was taken to Thunder Bay hospital Monday afternoon after being injured at a remote swimming area in the MacKenzie River.

Shuniah and Pass Lake firefighters, Superior North EMS and the OPP responded to the incident which occurred about 500 metres north of Highway 11/17.

According to a news release from Shuniah Fire and Emergency Services, rescuers travelled through dense bush to find the patient and a group of other young adults.

She may have suffered a broken ankle, but details of her condition are not available.

Paramedics stabilized the girl while firefighters set up extrication equipment.

They then transported her to a waiting ambulance at the highway within two hours of receiving the call for help.

Although the young woman was not hurt while in the water, Shuniah Fire and Emergency Services said the incident points to the dangers of travelling through and swimming in that area, "and the significant resources that are required to extricate someone to safety."

In 2013, a Thunder Bay man died in the same vicinity after reportedly cliff-diving from a rock ledge.
