THUNDER BAY – A fire in a Wilson Street basement has left the occupants of six apartment units temporarily homeless.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to the call on Sunday at about 5 p.m., encountering what they called a developing fire on the bottom floor of the three-storey, multi-unit building.

Crews deployed multiple hose lines through a basement window to knock down the fire. A quick search of the building was then conducted, but it was later determined all occupants had self-evacuated prior to the arrival of fire crews.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is holding the scene of the fire until an investigation can be conducted. Residents have been put in touch with the Red Cross, who are working with the landlord to ensure they have refuge until they are able to return to their homes.

Two alarms were called and a total of five pumper trucks, an aerial ladder and a command vehicle responded to the fire.
