THUNDER BAY -- An information picket was set up in front of the Service Ontario building on James Street Thursday morning.

Two area residents are trying to stop the MNR from aerial spraying the forests around this region.

Concerned citizen Richard Lane said they want people to sign their petition against the use of pesticides and herbicides in Ontario.

According to their pamphlet, the spraying of allegedly "poisonous toxins" is to take place around Thunder Bay on August 1.

Around 40 people from the township of Gillies have already signed the petition, and Nipigon residents are also concerned because the spraying is being done during blueberry picking season.

Lane wants they want the spraying banned in all of Ontario, claiming that it contaminates the environment.

“What they do is they spray it, defoliate the brush around the tree and the tree grows, but this is all for big business,” Lane said.

“This is for lumber companies. It has nothing to do with us and they are poisoning our environment…does that make any sense?”

Lane says a larger public demonstration is planned for Friday morning the Service Ontario office.
