THUNDER BAY -- A two-alarm garage fire that spread has caused extensive damage to a Riverside Drive home.
Firefighters braved frigid Thunder Bay weather Thursday afternoon and were hampered by water problems when they arrived at the blaze, which saw flames ripping through the attic of the 1970s-era bungalow.
"It looks like we have a fairly large home with a fire that appears to have started in the garage," said Fire Chief John Hay, an hour or so after the fire started.
"It's a significant fire. The garage was well involved with fire when the first crews arrived and it's stubborn, it's cold and we're having some challenges with water."
With temperatures hovering at -16 C, frozen water is not making it easy to douse the flames, Hay said.
"The hydrants here are all on one line, so we're going to work on that and keep working on the fire."
Hay said he believes there was at least one person at home at the time of the fire, but no injuries have been reported.
"We don't know if they were in the house at the time. I'm not clear on that just yet. But we don't believe there have been any injuries, firefighters or the community."
