Road work leads to intercity, south-side traffic woes

Thunder Bay drivers could find themselves taking an alternate route home Tuesday as they deal with a pair of construction projects.

The first closure is on Fort William Road from the Harbour Expressway to Central Avenue. The city and CN Rail are upgrading the railway crossing there.

City project engineer Rick Harms says they expect to re-open the road by late Thursday, but says there is still a lot of work to be done.

Once that railway crossing is done, the work crews will move on to the crossing on the Harbour Expressway, which will force the closure of that roadway for about five days.

Another closure causing traffic headaches today was on Simpson Street, between Pacific Avenue and Robertson Street.

Work crews had closed off the area overnight to repair a water main.

The work was supposed to be done by 8 a.m., but when they shut off the valves in the area one of the valves failed.

That section of Simpson Street remains closed, and is expected to re-open later Tuesday evening.
