The city is offering cyclists a chance to learn the rules of the road.

Adult Commuter Cycling is a one-day course scheduled for Saturday for adult cyclists to learn the best way to ride in traffic.

“There are a lot of people out there who want to ride, but there’s a lot of people who are really afraid of riding,” said Adam Krupper, the city’s active transportation coordinator.

“They’re afraid of traffic. They are unsure of what the rules of the road are. They are unsure of what they’re supposed to do to stay safe. This course clears up all that confusion,” he added.

The course, run by Safe Cycling Thunder Bay, will be taught by professionally trained and certified cycling instructors with one instructor per every six students.

The day will consist of three sessions starting with a classroom portion where riders will learn the road rules, how to make sure their bike is safe and how to deal with different traffic situations.

Then they’ll move to the parking lot and work on cycling techniques followed by a ride through the neighbourhood.

“We take people from the basics to the advanced in six or seven hours. We take them from someone who is unsure on how to do stuff to someone who feels really confident on the road and is competent,” said Krupper.

The Adult Commuter Cycling Course runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Volunteer Pool. The cost is $35. Participants can register by calling 625-8463 with the course code #267437.
