THUNDER BAY -- A gas leak in the downtown North core last month was likely caused by a sidewalk plow the city's acting roads manager says.
A significant gas line rupture on St. Paul Street last month caused a shutdown of the street and evacuated nearby buildings. City acting roads manager John Bilyk said GPS equipment shows that there was work in the area at the time to clear snowbanks.
"It's a possibility that we did strike that line," he said Friday but said that's not confirmed.
"It's possible we hit it. I can't say 100 per cent but there's a strong possibly that we were involved."
The struck gas metre did have barriers around it before the sidewalk was reconstructed. Bilyk said it's likely they weren't replaced. The operator probably didn't even know at the time that the gas line was struck he said.
