THUNDER BAY -- Rural fire departments and other emergency responders had their hands full with two separate fires just after noon on Monday.

Kaministiquia Volunteer Fire Department firefighters, along with Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry crews and OPP officers, responded to a grass fire on Ellis Road in Dawson Road Lots Township, an unincorporated area west of Thunder Bay. One outbuilding was destroyed in the blaze.

Meanwhile, a fire on Kivela Road in Lybster Township south of Thunder Bay required a response from the South Gillies Fire Department and the Nolalu Volunteer Fire Department, along with ministry resources and provincial police officers.

Several outbuildings are reported to have been destroyed from that fire, which is believed to have been ignited by a discarded cigarette butt.

Both fires resulted in property damage and environment conditions at the time were described by provincial police as "very dry."
