NOLALU — Reports of an explosion that rocked homes in the area sent emergency responders in Nolalu into action Wednesday afternoon.

"I was outside at another part of our property, and boy, it did shake. It was quite loud," said Ken Milenko, who lives on Fourth Road, about two kilometres from Highway 590.

Back at the house, Milenko's wife reported the building shook and that the couple's pet cat scurried to a hiding place.

Fortunately, it turned out there was no disaster, and no reported injuries.

Sarah Shoemaker, chief of Nolalu Emergency Services, said team members were deployed to investigate and learned the the boom was from a planned blast in a rock quarry on the Boreal Road.

Milenko said people would appreciate receiving a heads-up in the future.

"It's pretty hard to track down all the residents unless you go and put notes on their doors. I don't think a company should be expected to do that, but some kind of a warning would be good, even online."

A similar incident happened in June northeast of Thunder Bay.
