THUNDER BAY — The Thunder Bay Police Services Board has reappointed Ryan Hughes to the position of Deputy Chief of Police.
In an announcement Monday, the board said the appointment is for the next two years.
Hughes has been back on the job since last February, when he was reinstated following a one-year suspension and external investigation. The investigation found that some allegations against the deputy police chief were unsubstantiated while others, relating to the confidentiality of police information, had been dealt with appropriately.
Hughes began his policing career in 1998, and served in positions of increasing responsibility before first being promoted to deputy chief in August 2019.
Karen Machado, chair of the police board, said she and her colleagues look forward to continuing to work with him and supporting "the positive transformation of the service."
She added she's confident Hughes will continue to exemplify the qualities and skill sets necessary for his leadership role.
In a statement, Police Chief Darcy Fleury said he's seen Hughes' commitment to the police service and the community, and called him "a respected senior police leader in the Province of Ontario."
