THUNDER BAY -- Anyone who may still have a real Christmas tree in their home has until Saturday to drop it off at one of 10 locations throughout the city.
City solid waste diversion and recycling coordinator Jason Sherban said he expects around 40 tonnes of trees to come in from the holiday season.
"It's fairly consistent," he said.
Once collected, those trees are brought to the landfill, ground with other materials collected throughout the year and eventually turned into soil-enriching compost given out for free by the city every spring.
Most people understand now that trees aren't supposed to be put out with the trash although the odd one does still find its way to the curb. Stands, ornaments and even fake trees sometimes make their way into the tree locations.
"We see everything. We still see the stands that come on trees, the bags are still on them we have seen the odd fake Christmas tree that comes in. Obviously we want to remind people that it's just real Christmas trees, remove any ornaments, tree bags, stands," he said.
