THUNDER BAY – The crowdfunding campaign to save the Finlandia is closing in on its target goal, but the deadline to collect all $15,000 is quickly approaching.
For more than 100 years the Finnish Labour Temple has served as a cultural hub in the city. But earlier in March Kelly Saxberg, treasurer of the Finlandia Association, revealed that the organization was in dire straits.
“We’re facing substantial debt and challenges that came as a result of renovations that were necessary. The new roof, heating system and wheelchair accessibility but we’re struggling,” she told tbnewswatch.com.
That led to an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign, kicked off by Crystal DiGiuseppe. The campaign Save the Finlandia hopes to $15,000 to help the association, and as of Monday morning little more than $10,700.
As a fixed campaign, the crowdfunding initiative will only collect the money pledged if all $15,000 is raised.
The all-or-nothing goal raised its $10,000 in 20 days, but no only has 15 to collect the remains $5,000.
“In reality, $15,000 seems like a reasonable and achievable goal for our community,” reads the campaigns summary. “If our goal is achieved we would like to see the funds go into something concrete. Upon further discussion with the Finlandia Association the “Save the Finlandia” campaign, and the funds it receives, will raise awareness and support within our community.
“If the campaign is successful, the funds will be used to refurbish the auditorium to bring low cost productions to the hall and revitalize the hall's role within the community as a cultural hub for everyone.
