According to the Fraser Institute, Holy Family Elementary School is among the top 100 elementary schools in Ontario.

The Rosslyn Road school ranked 88th on the think tank's comparison of 2,695 elementary schools across the province, scoring 8.9 out of 10, a jump of 200 spots in its average ranking over the past five years.

At the other end of the spectrum, according to the Elementary School Report Card, is Sherbrooke Public School, which is ranked among Ontario's worst.
It checks in at No. 2,642, just 53 spots from last place, with a score of 1.6.

Four of the top five schools ranked in the city belong to the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board, and seven of the top 10.

St. Paul Elementary School is No. 2, at 119, with St. Francis Elementary School listed 281st. Woodcrest Public School is the top Lakehead Public Schools facility. The city's most recent elementary school earned 7.8 points to finish in the 392nd spot.
St. Elizabeth Elementary School rounds out the top 5, scoring 7.6 points, good for 479th spot.

Ecole Gron Morgan (479), Holy Cross Elementary School (525), St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School (606), Corpus Christi Elementary School (710) and Nor'wester View (710) finish the top 10 list.

McKellar Park Central Public School, with a 2.8 score, has been deemed the city's second worst, the 2,551st best elementary school in Ontario, tied with Algonquin Avenue Public School.

St. Ann Elementary School, with a 4.2 score, is the lowest ranked TBCDSB school and given a downward trend by the Fraser Institute, coming in at 2,269th overall.

"Using long-term, provincewide school performance data, our school rankings let parents monitor the performance of their child's school over time and also help educators identify key areas for improvement in their classrooms," said Michael Thomas, Fraser Institute associate director of school performance studies, in a release issued Sunday.

"Our report card is the only objective, reliable tool that shows which schools across Ontario have improved, or fallen behind, in terms of reading, writing, and mathematics over the past five years."

Rankings were based on nine criteria, based on the annual province-wide tests administered in reading, writing and mathematics by Ontario's Education Quality and Accountability Office.

The report card also includes a variety of factors about each school's make-up, such as the percentage of English as a second language students and the percentage of special needs students.

Nineteen schools scored a perfect 10 in this year's rankings, based on the 2010-11 year test results. Most were in the Greater Toronto Area.

A spokesman for Lakehead Public Schools on Sunday said they would make someone available to discuss the rankings on Monday. The Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board could not immediately be reached for comment.
