THUNDER BAY – A report of a truck submerged in the Kaministiquia River near the Mountdale boat launch appears to be without substance.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue sent a pair of surface divers into the water on Tuesday afternoon after Thunder Bay Police received a report via email from a boater claiming to have struck something the night prior.

Capt. Robert Di Paolo said they take all calls seriously.

“He said he hit his prop on something and it seemed like it was the shape of a truck on the sonar,” Di Paolo said.

“We’re going to assume the worst and go out there and search.”

The operation was hampered by a lack of equipment.

“Unfortunately we don’t have the equipment to go under the water, so we had to do a surface search, looking with goggles as well as feeling,” Di Paolo said.

Nothing was found and the search was called off, although a last sweep was conducted, thanks in part to public assistance.

“We’re getting some locals with sonar to do a quick sweep of the area. But so far it looks like it’s nothing,” Di Paolo said.
