UPDATED: Search warrant leads to theft charges against Atikokan town employee

ATIKOKAN, Ont. – A 44-year-old Atikokan town employee faces a number of theft-related charges following an execution of a search warrant.

According to a release, Rainy River OPP and the Rainy River District crime unit executed a search warrant on March 28 at a residence in Atikokan.

Police say the warrant followed an extensive investigation involving some missing town property.

As a result of the investigation, police charged Peter Burbeck, 44, of Atikokan with theft over $5,000, trafficking in property obtained by crime, possessing proceeds of crime over $5,000, three counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm and four counts of careless storage of firearms and ammunition.

Burbeck is the town's Director of Public Works.

He will appear in Atikokan Provincial Court on May 29 to answer to the charges.

Atikokan Mayor Dennis Brown said the town is currently unable to comment on the case.
