THUNDER BAY – A second case of COVID-19 has been identified at Westgate CVI, but is unrelated to another case confirmed days earlier, authorities say.

Lakehead Public Schools made the announcement in a statement Friday.

Because the virus is not yet believed to have spread within the school setting and the cases are not linked, an outbreak has not been declared at the James Street public high school.

Instead, those identified as close contacts required to stay home and not return to the school setting until cleared by public health.

That will include anyone in the same classroom or cohort, and some or all individuals with the same bus transportation.

Anyone not identified as a close contact can continue to attend school as normal.

The health unit had identified a separate case involving the school earlier this week, announcing a potential exposure on Monday and confirming it Wednesday.

Caregivers of students in the impacted classes or cohorts will be contacted directly by a public health nurse, the health unit said, with instructions on next steps. Any teachers, staff, visitors or any others who are impacted will also be contacted.
