First-degree murder charge laid in Big Island First Nation death

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – A 26-year-old man is in custody in connection with a suspicious death in Big Island First Nation.

According to a police release, the Treaty Three Police Service requested the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police on Aug. 30 with a suspicious death investigation.

Police say, at the time, Stacy Comegan of Big Grassy River First Nation was charged with indignity to a dead body.

A post-mortem examination was conducted in Toronto on Sept. 5 and the victim was identified as Danielle Big George, 23, of Big Island First Nation.

On Sept. 25, Stacy Comegan was arrested in Winnipeg with the assistance of the Winnipeg Police Service and further charged with first-degree murder in the death of Danielle Big George.

He was transported back to Fort Frances. Comegan appeared in court and was remanded into custody.
