THUNDER BAY -- Public High Schools in the city have security guards in the hallways.

The move comes after the teachers' union withdrew some services, including general supervision, due to their ongoing contract dispute with the province.

The Lakehead Public School Board added security to the hallways of its four high schools on Tuesday. Two guards have been added to each school.

Director of Education Cathy Siemieniuk said it's too early to put a dollar figure on the move, but adds you can't put a price on student safety.

She added that it's unclear how long security guards will remain in the high schools.

The board is using contingency funds to pay for the new security measures.

The Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation announced job action on Monday at 20 boards around the province.
