THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay police say they recovered a semi-automatic handgun and a quantity of drugs after this past weekend’s 26-hour standoff at a Windsor Street housing complex.

Police, in a release issued on Monday, said after taking 36-year-old Kurt Maurice Downer into custody, they searched the residence where the suspect allegedly was holed up through most of Saturday and also found a quantity of drugs consistent with drug trafficking.

Downer has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, resisting a police officer, being in a dwelling unlawfully, breach of recognizance and breach of probation. Further charges are pending in the ongoing investigation.

The suspect in 2007 was implicated in kidnapping and weapons offences and sentenced to nearly five years in prison for kidnapping a 16-year-old boy to send a message to the victim’s brother.
