THUNDER BAY -- A sentencing hearing got underway Thursday for a Thunder Bay couple charged with the murder of 62-year-old Richard Spence.
While no recommendations were made by either the Crown of defence counsel, Justice Daniel Newton outlined the steps he will be taking in order to determine an appropriate sentence.
Monica Spence and her boyfriend Daniel Debassige were charged with second-degree murder back in 2014 for the death of her cousin, Richard Spence.
On May 26, a 12-member jury found Spence guilty of manslaughter and Debassige guilty of second-degree murder.
The pair returned to the Thunder Bay Courthouse Thursday afternoon for their sentencing.
Justice Newton says he needs time to determine the facts before sentencing.
He says the jury's decision shows that Spence was found guilty showing her actions went beyond self defence.
Therefore Newton says he will need to find evidence that supports she was provoked and, or intoxicated.
The couple is scheduled to return to court on July 20.
