THUNDER BAY - Two men who were first charged with second-degree murder but later pleaded guilty to lesser charges in connection with the 2016 stabbing death of 18-year-old, Brent Donio, will be back in court for sentencing submissions in June.
Clinton Netemegesic and Cecil Matinet appeared in a Thunder Bay Courtroom on Monday for a scheduled sentencing hearing before Justice Chantal Brochu.
Crown prosecutor, Gordon Fillmore, Matinet’s attorney, David Bruzzese, and Netemegesic’s attorney, Gil Labine, were to present sentencing submissions in court, however, a Gladue report ordered for Netemegesic is not yet available.
Justice Brochu said she agrees that the Gladue report is an important part of the sentencing process and agreed to adjourn until June 1 when counsel will submit sentencing recommendations. Victim impact statements will also be presented to the court.
On the night of July 13, 2016, police were called to a Windsor Street housing complex after receiving reports of a fight. Donio suffered stab wounds during the altercation and was transported to hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced dead.
Both Netemegesic and Matinet were first charged with second-degree murder, but in December 2017, Netemegesic pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter, while Matinet pleaded guilty to aggravated assault.
Netemegesic, who was 26 at the time of the incident, remains in custody. Matinet, who was 18 at the time of his arrest, is not being held in custody.
