Serious accident closes Highway 11

Collision south of Beardmore closes Highway 11 into Sunday night, with Beardmore community centre opened for stranded travelers

GREENSTONE, Ont. – A serious accident on Highway 11 caused an hours-long closure between Beardmore and Nipigon Sunday, with a stretch of the highway remaining closed into the night.

At least two trucks appear to have been involved in the accident, based on photos of the incident posted to social media.

Ontario Provincial Police announced the closure around 1:30 p.m. following an accident near the intersection of Highway 11 and Macdiarmid Road.

The location is just kilometres from Biinjitiwaabik Zaaging Anishinaabek, or Rocky Bay First Nation, and about 20 kilometres south of Beardmore.

The Greenstone Fire Department advised Sunday afternoon it was opening washrooms near Beardmore for stranded travelers.

“The Municipality of Greenstone has opened the Community Centre in Beardmore to provide washrooms to stranded travellers,” it announced via Facebook. “Please be advised that COVID-19 restrictions and screenings are in place and must be adhered to.”
