THUNDER BAY -- Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the city, warning for the potential of strong winds, large hail and heavy rain.

The national weather service issued the advisory around 3:30 p.m. on Monday, warning conditions were favourable for developing severe thunderstorms that could produce wind gusts up to 90 kilometres per hour, nickel-sized hail and heavy rain.

The thunderstorms are expected to develop later in the afternoon and into the early evening hours.

Environment Canada advises people to go indoors when thunder roars, warning lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Severe thunderstorms can also produce tornados, the advisory adds.
