Shad Valley students showed off their artistic side Thursday.

About 10 of the 60 students participating in the academic program at Lakehead University this month performed in a concert this afternoon in LU’s Agora.

Eric Cho has been playing the alto saxophone for about five years and showed off his skills on a rendition of Moon River.

“I’m very excited,” he said. “I think it’s a great opportunity because Shad Valley is kind of a business and science focus but they give us the chance to showcase our other talents besides educational ones.”

The concert was also a welcomed break from the rigorous academics of the Shad program for Anna Dai Feng.

The 17-year-old sang as part of a trio for the classic song Don’t Get Around Much Anymore.
She said travelling to Thunder Bay from Vancouver for the Shad program is a great chance to get into a different environment.

“It’s really cool to see all the talent here and be able to reach out to different types of people and voices,” she said. “I’ve really been enjoying the experience here.”

The concert had performances featuring strings, drums, vocals and a variety of other instruments.

Show coordinator Alexis Sharp said the students had been practicing and organizing the show for the past week.

The Shad program overall intends to give high school students a taste of university life before they get there.

“It’s a really intense program,” said Sharp. “It will get them totally prepared for university.”
