THUNDER BAY -- Port officials are reporting another strong month for shipping in September.

In total, about 850,000 tonnes of cargo moved through the port last month.  That's 27 per cent more than the five-year average for the month.

And it boosted total tonnage for the year to more than 4.9-million tonnes, which is about a million above the average total.

Foreign vessel traffic also spiked last month, with 16 salties arriving in Port, the most of any September since 2000.

With this year’s western grain harvest reaching Thunder Bay earlier than usual, Port officials say they expect the month of October will also be busy and add substantially to overall totals.
