(DRYDEN, ON) – In 2015, OPP statistics have shown that impaired driving occurrences around the province and region have remained relatively the same, but in the Dryden/Ignace Detachment area they have increased by 52%.

Statistics have also shown that alcohol related collisions across the province have increased by 33% and regionally they have increased by 19%.  In the Dryden/Ignace Detachment area has increased by 129%.

Also noted in our local area statistics were the average age of offending drivers; with the average age being 43 years of age in 2013 and lowering to 33 years of age in 2015.

Due to these numbers, the Dryden Detachment has requested Dr. Michael Wilson, Regional Coroner for the Northwest Region; attend the communities of Ignace and Dryden, to provide a presentation to local high school students and the community discussing “Preventing Alcohol and Risk Related Trauma in Youth”.

Dr. Wilson will be attending our communities on April 26, 2016.  His schedule is as follows:

  • Ignace High School – 194 Davy Lake Road, Ignace - 10:00 a.m.
  • Dryden High School – 79 Casimir Avenue, Dryden - 1:00 p.m.
  • Dryden Community Centre – 100 Casimir Avenue, Dryden - 7:00 p.m.

The Dryden OPP has been engaging with the community with these findings and hopefully through a collaborative effort, attempt to reveal possible causations of this issue and discuss possible solutions.

The results of these alcohol related collisions involving death or injury have devastating effects on families, the community, including the emergency service workers that attend these crashes, and the survivors.
