SHUNIAH, Ont. – Crews from the Shuniah Fire and Emergency Services on Thursday night helped free an ambulance stuck in heavy snow on Highway 527.

According to a release issued by the department, fire officials received a call for assistance at about 4 p.m. from an ambulance on its way to Thunder Bay with a patient on board.

It became stuck in approximately 15 centimetres of snow about 62 kilometres north of Highway 11/17.

Upon arriving, emergency crews noted the ambulance was on the edge of the road, but the rear doors were hovering over a steep bank.

Using a winch with the support of a pumper, command truck and another ambulance for support, the stuck vehicle was freed within an hour and the patient was transferred to the other waiting ambulance to carry on to Thunder Bay.

Five firefighters, the OPP and additional Superior North EMS personnel responded to the call. There were no injuries reported.
